Do Addicted Loved Ones Benefit From Interventions?

Addiction is a disease of denial. Men and women who suffer at the hands of addiction will very rarely admit to themselves – or others – that they have a serious problem and need professional help. If you have ever suffered from substance abuse or addiction yourself, you probably know exactly how bad you let things get before you became willing to ask for the help you needed for so long. Most individuals who suffer from an addictive disorder will tell themselves things like, “If I wanted to stop I could.” Or, “Things haven’t gotten that bad. Everybody drinks the way I do; my parents are just being dramatic.” Because of this, it can be extremely difficult to convince a loved one to enter into addiction treatment, even it becomes exceedingly clear that professional help is necessary. If you have a loved one who is in desperate need of addiction treatment but refuses to accept it, staging a professional intervention is an ideal option.

What is an Addiction Intervention Exactly?

An addiction intervention is a process that is very carefully staged and thoroughly planned by a professional interventionist. At Recreate Life Counseling, we have licensed and highly experienced interventionists on staff to help your loved one become willing to seek treatment on his or her own accord. For more information, please feel free to give our treatment advisors a call at any point in time.

What Does an Addiction Intervention Look Like?

An intervention has several different stages, which are typically laid out as follows:

  • First of all, the family members of the addicted loved one will reach out to a professional interventionist. At this point, they will either believe that their loved one’s life is in immediate danger or that without professional intervention, the addictive disorder will only continue to worsen. The interventionist will work with the family members to develop a viable plan for the remainder of the process.
  • The interventionist will then set up times to meet with the family members of the individual who is suffering from alcoholism or drug addiction. During these meetings the remainder of the process will be laid out, letters (that are to be read aloud at the actual intervention) will be written, and the interventionist will help the family members come up with reasonable boundaries to enforce in the case that their loved one does not agree to seek professional help. The interventionist will also help the family members of the addicted loved one find an appropriate rehab center – one that meets all of his or her clinical needs.
  • Then the intervention will take place in a controlled, safe, and supportive setting. Ultimatums will be laid out, and the loved one will have the opportunity to attend medically monitored detox and inpatient treatment immediately. If he or she refuses, boundaries will be put into place.

Benefits of a Professionally Staged Intervention

There are many benefits when it comes to a professionally staged intervention. Above all else, your addicted loved one will benefit immensely from the intervention. Not only will he or she be presented with the opportunity to attend treatment immediately, but he or she will be met with the love and support of everyone that has been affected by the addiction personally. This love and support are truly invaluable.
